Frequently Asked Questions
Is Climbing a good workout? It is better than sitting on the couch. Climbing is a movement-based sport, kind of like gymnastics and figure skating. These activities/sports are similar in that they all involve movement. While it doesn’t hurt to be strong or flexible the main thing is being able to master the techniques. The best climbers are not the strongest climbers. The best climbers are the ones that are able to get to the top of the climb. The best climbers don’t pull themselves up the wall. They use their legs to push themselves up. My husband and me want to try it but I only weigh 130 lbs and my husband weighs 230, how am I going to hold him?The equipment is designed so that someone lighter can hold someone heavier. The person holding the rope is anchored to the floor and the device used to secure the climber allows you to hold someone as much 3-4 times your own weight. (so if you weigh 130 you can hold someone that weighs over 400 lbs) Can I bring my kids?Absolutely!!! Climbing is fun for the whole family (kind of like bowling but without all the smoke) the adults will hold the rope for each other and the kids. It is really easy. How long does it take? The record is 4 seconds. Most people take a couple of hours. The intro class takes about 30 minutes. That’s where we show you how to hold the rope for someone else. You will do a little climbing during that time. Most people will stay for a couple of hours the first time. I have climbed at other gyms before, do I have to take the belay class or can I ‘test’ out?Yes, you have to take the belay class. Unfortunately there is no national certification (yet) for climbing. If you have climbed before the belay class probably won’t take very long but you still have to take it. If you have a belay card from another gym the class is discounted. Is indoor climbing like outdoor climbing? In some ways indoor climbing is exactly like climbing outside. The equipment is the same. The way you hold the rope is the same. The way you attach the rope to your harness is the same. The way you move up the climb is very similar. In a lot of ways climbing outside is not like climbing inside. Climbing outside is considerably more dangerous than climbing inside. |
